Fabrizio Romano explains why the star wants to leave Man United and where he could go next

The news, originally reported by The Times, threatens to derail United’s preparations for the upcoming season under new manager Erik ten Hag.

Respected transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has now confirmed Ronaldo wants to leave this summer and has broken down the current situation in a riveting seven-minute video on his YouTube channel.

Romano claims he verified the ‘shocking’ story after speaking with ‘many sources close to Cristiano, close to his agent Jorge Mendes and close to Cristiano’s family’.

“The reality is that Cristiano wants to leave Manchester United,” Romano said. “Jorge Mendes has been clear, they want to try to find a solution this summer.”

United are yet to make a major signing in the summer transfer window and Romano says the club’s inactivity in the market has “disappointed” Ronaldo, who sees it as lacking “ambition”.

“He is really disappointed with the general situation at Manchester United [but] in the market in particular,” Romano said.

“I’m told that Cristiano likes Erik ten Hag, he’s convinced he’s a very good manager, the right person to relaunch this project. But it can’t just be the manager, it takes the club, the board of administration and owners – a very strong message and statement to the market. They need to sign players.”

Romano added: “I like the manager, I like the club but I don’t feel the ambition. That’s Cristiano’s message.”

Later in the video, Romano claims that Ronaldo believes the United squad needs ‘six or seven’ major signings.

“Cristiano is really happy with some players in the team. But he is convinced that some signings are needed – six, seven important players are needed at Manchester United,” added Romano.

Romano says Mendes is “currently working with many clubs” to find a solution for Ronaldo this summer.

“He had a discussion with [Bayern Munich’s director of football, Hasan] Salihamidzic but Bayern have confirmed very publicly that they have no intention of signing Cristiano” Romano said.

Romano added he had ‘no confirmation’ as to whether any Italian clubs are ready to make a bid for Ronaldo, while he has seemingly ruled out the five-time Ballon d’Or winner moving to Chelsea, his Premier League rival.

“It is true that Mendes had a meeting with [Chelsea owner] Todd Boehly to discuss Cristiano but remember Chelsea will only sign players wanted by Thomas Tuchel,” added Romano.

“Todd Boehly will give full power to Thomas Tuchel. At the moment Chelsea are busy with many other players, not Cristiano.”

Romano added that Ronaldo was also unlikely to join rival Lionel Messi at Paris Saint-Germain.

“Paris Saint-Germain won’t sign Cristiano. From today, that’s their position. But as we know in the market, anything can happen,” Romano said.

Manchester United have reportedly insisted Ronaldo is not for sale this summer.

Romano says the Portugal captain has yet to receive a concrete offer from another club and could still stay at Old Trafford.

“Cristiano hasn’t reached an agreement with any club so far,” added Romano.

“So it’s not Cristiano who is going to fight with Manchester United because he has a proposal, a good offer and wants to leave immediately. He wants to send a message, he wants to see the ambition. And he wants to go. in case he finds a proposal.

“But at the moment he has no agreement with any club.”
