Marvel’s Midnight Suns is the next game from developer Firaxis Games, the studio behind Civilization and the last three XCOM games. While it features elements of tactical strategy, Marvel’s Midnight Suns is far from a superhero reskin of XCOM, boasting a card-based combat system and a more substantial emphasis on role-playing. Below, we go over everything we know about the upcoming game.
Firaxis Games is collaborating with Marvel Games on the project and attracting talent from across Marvel properties to bring its cast of characters to life. Yuri Lowenthal will voice Spider-Man, reprising his role as Marvel’s Spider-Man from Insomniac Games, and Lyrica Okano will voice Nico Minoru, reprising his role from the MCU’s Runaways.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns will be available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, PC and Switch. For PC, the game will be available through Steam and the Epic Games Store.
Marvel’s Midnight Suns launches on Xbox, PlayStation, and PC on October 7. The game will be released on Switch at a later date.
What we know
The Midnight Suns story is loosely based on the 90s comic book series Rise of the Midnight Suns, a crossover event that paired the Avengers with more supernatural and magic-based characters to stop a demonic menace. Since the story revolves around supernatural threats, the roster includes characters who specialize in magical abilities like Dr. Strange, Ghost Rider, Magik, and Blade. These characters are joined by Avenger mainstays like Captain America, Captain Marvel, Iron Man, and Wolverine.
There will be 13 playable characters in total, including your own player character. This character, called The Hunter, is customizable in everything from his appearance to his power set. Firaxis says it worked closely with Marvel to develop The Hunter, who is the child of Lilith, the game’s main antagonist.
Only 11 of the playable characters have been confirmed so far, but other Marvel characters have appeared in the game’s cinematic trailers. mentally by Lilith – have appeared in trailers. It is possible that we will save some of these characters at some point in the campaign, and then they will become part of the playable roster.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns combat will be turn-based, similar to XCOM 2 and XCOM: Chimera Squad, but with a pretty big twist. Instead of set abilities, your heroes will each have a set of ability cards that will be shuffled when you bring three into battle together. These cards range from basic attacks to special skills, allowing you to buff other players or launch enemies onto the battlefield. Cards can also be customized with variations to suit your style of play.
Performing these skills will create a heroism meter. This will then allow you to perform Heroic Abilities, super-powered special moves that are unlocked by forging relationships with other characters in your base of operations, the Abbey. Midnight Suns will also feature destructible environments, which will add a new tactical twist to combat.
PC System Specifications
Firaxis has yet to announce PC system specs for Marvel’s Midnight Suns. The developer will likely release this information closer to the game’s release.
Firaxis has not announced any plans for multiplayer in Marvel’s Midnight Suns. The developer has included multiplayer in XCOM 2 though, so it’s certainly possible that Marvel’s Midnight Suns will have multiplayer as well.
Firaxis assured fans that it will not offer any microtransactions that impact the battle system or card-based gameplay in any way. However, it has announced that it will offer purchasable cosmetic character skins. The studio has not announced any plans for further DLC.
Hey folks, regarding our battle card system, there are no loot boxes in Marvel’s @MidnightSuns or related microtransactions to get more cards (i.e. gamma reels). We will have purely cosmetic character skins for purchase that do not affect game balance in any way https://t.co/lHhdwbMpSZ
