“Top Gun: Maverick,” the sequel to the 1986 “Top Gun” movie, is now theatrically only. The box office hit will be available on Paramount Plus later this year, and you can already pre-order it via

The film’s digital release date is listed as August 23 on Amazon, but it’s unclear exactly when it will arrive on Paramount Plus. Although other recent Paramount films have arrived on the studio’s streaming service 45 days after their theatrical premiere, “Top Gun: Maverick” will not follow this release strategy.

Tom Cruise returns to the “Top Gun” franchise as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell, a U.S. Navy test pilot tasked with training a group of young Top Gun graduates for a high-risk, specialized mission. The posse includes Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick’s late best friend Goose.

Val Kilmer also reprises his role as Tom “Iceman” Kazansky, a longtime rival of Maverick. New cast members include Jennifer Connolly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman and Ed Harris.

At the time of writing, “Top Gun: Maverick” holds a “97% Certified Fresh” rating on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, with some critics saying it’s better than the first film. It’s also the highest-grossing film of 2022 so far, grossing over $1.1 billion worldwide.

“Top Gun: Maverick” will be available to rent or purchase from online streaming retailers starting August 23. You can pre-order the film for $20 on Amazon Prime Video to get instant streaming access at 12:00 p.m. ET on August 23.

When will ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ be available on Paramount Plus?

“Top Gun: Maverick” will air on Paramount Plus after its theatrical release ends, but no official release date has been announced.

Although other recent Paramount films have arrived on the streaming service 45 days after their theatrical premiere, “Top Gun: Maverick” will take longer to make its streaming debut. Paramount CEO Bob Bakish confirmed the film’s exemption from the studio’s 45-day streaming window in an interview with The New York Times.

Given that the movie is set to hit streaming retailers on August 23rd, it’s likely to also debut on Paramount Plus at the same time. That said, it hasn’t been confirmed yet, so we’ll have to wait and see what Paramount decides.

Once “Top Gun: Maverick” is available on Paramount Plus, all subscribers will be able to watch the new film. The Essential plan is $5/month and includes access to the entire streaming library with limited commercial downtime. The Premium plan is $10/month and lets you stream ad-free on-demand content, plus you can watch your local CBS station live.

You can pre-order the Blu-ray of “Top Gun: Maverick” now on Amazon, but no official release date has been announced. A 4K Blu-ray edition is also available for pre-order on Amazon.

“Top Gun” is free to watch on Prime Video for Amazon Prime subscribers. Amazon Prime subscriptions cost $15 per month or $140 per year, but a standalone Prime Video subscription without the other Prime benefits costs $9 per month. “Top Gun” is streaming in UHD quality on Prime Video.

The first “Top Gun” movie follows Maverick as he and a group of naval aviators get the chance to train in the Navy’s Top Gun program. The film was released in 1986 and has maintained cultural relevance ever since; in 2015 it was added to the Library of Congress National Film Registry for preservation.
