What is open and what is closed on Independence Day? 4th of July hours for shops, banks, post offices, etc.

Monday marks the July 4 holiday and several businesses and establishments will close to commemorate America’s independence.

In 1870, the 4th of July was named a federal holiday because it signified the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Not only do federal workers get a day off, but many Americans get a day off on Monday to celebrate the holiday.

But some businesses will stay open if you need to run out at the last minute to stock up on your BBQ or picnic.

Here’s an overview of open and closed businesses and times you can expect on July 4:

The post office

The US Postal Service will close on Monday and will not deliver mail that day.

Other package services

UPS will not have pickup or delivery services on Independence Day, and their locations will also be closed for the day. However, the parcel delivery company will continue to offer Express Critical service on Monday.

FedEx will also close most of its locations on July 4, with nearly all of its shipping services halted for the day, including door-to-door delivery. Check with your local FedEx branch to determine if it is open or has reduced hours on Mondays.

Expect most banks to be closed on July 4 as they observe the holidays.

Sotck exchange

The New York Stock Exchange will be closed on Monday, in addition to the Nasdaq.

Government offices

Non-essential federal, state and municipal government offices will also be closed on Independence Day.

Retail stores

Many stores will be open on July 4, but some will have modified hours to observe the holidays. Check with your local outlet for hours of operation.

Here are a few retailers that will be open, but with reduced hours, on Monday, as USA Today reports.
